Traditional Islam and Tasawwuf (Sufism)

Part of the “Lectures on Islam” series, delivered at the University of Georgia,

April 5, 2001 on the eve of the 10th of Muharram 1422,

anniversary of the Martyrdom of  Sayyidinaa Imam Hussain ‘alaihi salaam

Delivered By

Muhammad Sa’id Hunafa Qadiri

10 Muharram 1422

   HADITH-E-GABRIEL

It was related on the authority of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: One day, as we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) there came upon us a man in very white clothes and intensely black hair. No sign of journey (i.e. fatigue or dust) was visible on him, and none of us knew him. He sat facing the Prophet (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in such a way, that his folded knees touched the knees of the Prophet, placed the palms of his hands on his own thighs and then he said: "0 Muhammad, tell me about Islam." The Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

"Islam is that you bear witness; that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger, that you keep up the prayers, that you pay the Zakat, that you fast in (the month of) Ramadan, that if you have the means to travel to make pilgrimage to the House of Allah (i.e. Ka'aba)."He said, "You said the truth."

  TYPES OF QADIRI'S

Yes, Qadiri's are of three types:

  1. First is the one who is called an Arif engaged in Allah’s dhikr Laa ilaha ill Allahu Muhammadur Rasulullah (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم).
  2. Second is the one whose salaat blesses him with the union of Allah and is engaged in silent dhikr (Khafi) and always remains absorbed in Allah.
  3. Third is one who also has Ma’arfa of Allah with Mushaiba (beholding).  And with that is blessed with Haqq-ul-Yaqeen (the ultimate by which a beholder sees the very objective in which he used to believe without seeing).  He remains intoxicated and is always drowned in the Noor of the Holy Court of Sayyidina Rasul-e-Akram (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم), remains in Hazoori (in the Holy Court) but apparently his affairs (worldly wise) are pitiable and unsettled, thus, he remains silent, tight lipped (no vain talking), and is  fanaa fillah.  He is a Talib according to the Holy Quran (know that the friends of Allah shall never have any fear nor grievance and sorrow).

HE WHO TURNS AWAY FROM REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH IS A WORLDLY PERSON

I pity and wonder at the people who instead of running towards Allah, run away from Him as if they had never heard or been exposed to Ma’arfa of Allah and yet there are some who despite of all that call themselves Arif - the one who had gained entry into the Holy Court.  But in fact they are without any Ma’arfa and miles away from the Holy Court of Sayyidina Rasul-e-Akram (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) and on account of their Kashf (nasooti) and satanic Karama and Bid'at (innovation in faith) Shaitan makes them haughty.  Therefore in pursuit of worldly wealth day and night they corrupt themselves.
