Imam El-Sheikh Syed Mubarik Ali Shah Jilani El-Hashimi,
al-Hasani wal-Husaini

A Guide to the Way of Allahu Ta’ala and His Holy Last Messenger
Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa aalihi wa as’haabihi wa Sallam

El-Sheikh Syed Mubarik Ali Shah Jilani is from Ahli-Bayt, a direct descendant of the Holy Last Messenger, Syedena Muhammad ibn Abdullah (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim). One of his forefathers, Hazrat Sheikh Syed Muhyuddin Abdul Qadir Jilani, (May Allah Shower His Mercies upon him) is acknowledged throughout the Islamic world as being the supreme saint of Islam. Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani devoted his whole being to the worship and servitude of Allah, caring nothing for the empty pleasures of the worldly life. His efforts were rewarded by his attainment of spiritual stations unmatched by any other Wali (saint). He was endowed with the power to heal the sick, and manifested many other miraculous powers.

El-Sheikh Syed Mubarik Ali Shah Jilani, like his famous ancestor, also lives a life of devotion to Allah Ta'ala and in service of His creation. His years as a young adult were spent in seclusion in the lofty mountains of the Himalayas, where his knowledge of the Divine [Ma'arfa] became very great, and he attained the high spiritual station and Allah gave him knowledge of healing physical and psychological ailments (which are in reality disorders of the soul), by using selected phrases of the Holy Qur’an and prayers of the prophets.

Again, paralleling the life of his famous ancestor, exhibiting the love and compassion for humanity, and in the example of the shining characteristics of the Holy Last Messenger (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim), Sheikh Jilani abandoned his life of seclusion and began his mission of service to humanity.

Sheikh Jilani introduces Qur’anic Psychiatry

In 1976, a group of Muslim psychiatrists at the Psychiatric Research Center of Shahar Hospital, Taif, Saudi Arabia, set out to scientifically prove the fact that the Holy Qur’an is capable of healing, as Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:
O Mankind! There hath come to you guidance from your Lord and a healing for the diseases in your hearts, and for those who believe, Guidance and a Mercy.

And we sent down in the Holy Qur’an such things as have healing and mercy for the believers and but increases the miseries of the disbelievers.

Several reputable Muslim scholars were approached by these doctors but were unable to offer any assistance with the project. Finally when they came to Sheikh Jilani seeking his help, he eagerly accepted the challenge. The results of the project were monitored and recorded by two psychiatrists, Dr Gaber, a Christian and a Muslim, Dr. Mahmuda Parveen, and witnessed by a team of scientists from eight countries for eleven months.

Patients suffering from many types of mental disorders were treated and cured. Essentially, the majority of patients responded remarkably well to Qur’anic therapy, especially those who had not undergone any previous psychological treatments. However, the response level of those who had previously received massive doses of drugs and “shock therapy” were very poor.

One of Sheikh Jilani's most prominent cases was that of the son of the chief bodyguard of King Fahd, who was critically injured in a car accident and had gone into a coma for the past five days. He was brought in a special plane from Riyadh where doctors tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

A large number of doctors and government officials stood outside the Center as he laid on the bed. Everyone was asked to leave and headphones were placed on the patient's head and specially selected prayers from Holy Qur’an were played, which revived him within 15 minutes.

As more miraculous results of this type were achieved, it became evident that the project employing the Jilani Methodology of Qur’anic Therapy was a great success. Yet, the very psychiatrists who had begun the project, feeling the threat to their very profession by the effectiveness of the Jilani Methodology, began to turn against Sheikh Jilani and tried to discredit his work. When Dr Dennis, who was Secretary General of the International Psychiatrist Association, and had witnessed the results of the project, was approached by Sheikh Jilani concerning an opportunity to introduce the Jilani Methodology in London, how disappointing for him was the doctor's reply, “I don't want to believe in religion.” [note how this doctor would rather let millions suffer and die than to swallow his atheistic ego and help millions upon millions of patients who are suffering numerous diseases that can be cured via Qur’anic Therapy, thus giving them a fresh start on life].

For more detailed information on this fascinating subject, read Sheikh Jilani's books Qur’anic Psychiatry  and A Report on Curing Some Incurable Diseases.

Islam in America: Invigorated and Refined by Sheikh Jilani

Aside from waking Muslims up to the urgency of coming to the aid of their brothers and sisters in Afghanistan, Sheikh Jilani's first visit to America had a much greater impact. He found there people from all walks of life who, in their quest for the ultimate truth, had accepted Islam with an enthusiasm unmatched anywhere else in the world. However, they were not properly educated in all of the aspects of al-Islam, which is more than just religion, but a perfect way of life which covers its every facet. On seeing this, Sheikh Jilani decided to remedy the situation and bring those American Muslims up to the level which would allow them to attain the higher perfection in living the life of a Believer.

His task was made somewhat easier by the fact that anyone with a good heart, immediately upon casting their first glance at the Sheikh, knew that he was someone special, who had been sent by Allah Ta'ala as guidance and a mercy. All too happily, the Muslims in America accepted him as their Imam and Murshid (Spiritual Guide).

Muslims, who previous to meeting the Sheikh, were known for their laudable qualities of kindness, bravery, generosity, veracity, etc. gladly accepted him. Those who had previously exhibited undesirable traits, and were known as liars, cheats, and backbiters rejected him on some pretense or other. As Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

Allah guides not the wrong doing people.

That in itself was sufficient proof for his new followers that Sheikh Jilani was on the right path. He taught his students to live according to Deen ul-Islam in letter and spirit, giving them a complete sense of self purpose and understanding man's goal in life: To return to his Creator. With that understanding came a desire to live a more moral and righteous life for self and family. Therefore, Sheikh Jilani encouraged his followers in America to become upstanding citizens of their county, as well as Muslims. They were discouraged from participating in criminal acts of any kind. They were enjoined to obtain education and training skills and stay off the welfare roles as this depleted the dignity of the Muslims [and others]. The majority of Sheikh Jilani's followers purchased land in areas away from the urban metropolis and developed small villages where they could raise their children in a wholesome environment and live a life of pure Islam, free from the decadence of a godless society.

Establishment of Muslims of the Americas and the Qur’anic Open University

To implement his plan of raising the status of his American Talibeen (students), Sheikh Jilani established the Muslims of the Americas and its affiliates, Qur’anic Open University. Many new programs were initiated by MOA especially in the field of Tabligh, the propagation of al-Islam.

Q.O.U. campuses were established throughout the United States, Canada and the West Indies, South America and Pakistan. Through these campuses, arrangements were made to send aspiring believers to Pakistan for intensified training in Islamic Studies, The students studied and received diplomas in Islamic sciences such as Fiqh (Islamic Law), 'Ilm ul-Qur’an (science of Holy Qur’an), Ilm ul-Hadith (science of Islamic traditions), Qiraat (proper recitation of Holy Qur’an), and Arabic studies,  in addition to courses which would improve the quality of life and perfect Iman, such as Adab and Ikhlaq-e-Muhammadi (Islamic etiquettes and conduct of Holy Last Messenger, Sall Allahu alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim).

Those students who graduated from the course of study in Pakistan, subsequently became instructors in their hometowns. In an amazingly short time, the light of knowledge began to shine all over the country while the darkness of Ignorance was dispelled.

Banaa Tun-Noor International Chapter, Inc.

In 1987, the first group of young American ladies went to Pakistan under the auspices of QOU. This group spent a particularly intensified four months of Islamic training in which they received knowledge equivalent to a full college year. This group was to initiate the ladies arm of the Muslims of the Americas. Sheikh Jilani names them the Banaa Tun-Noor. Prior to this, many of the women of MOA had studied directly under the Sheikh, and were trained in the Jilani Methodology of Qur’anic healing. They then established Qur’anic Therapy in the United States, with excellent results and were automatically incorporated into the newly founded Banaa Tun-Noor.

In most recent years, the atrocities committed by the Indian government against the people of Occupied Kashmir has drawn the attention of Muslims all over the world, and in aiding these people, Sheikh Jilani again being in the forefront. He, with the help of the men and ladies of his community, organized campaigns to raise badly needed food, medicine, blankets, and other essential items for the thousands of Kashmiri refugees who were driven from their homes by the scorched earth and ethnic cleansing policies of the Indian Hindu dogs.

Banaa Tunoor have visited the refugee camps of Azad [free] Kashmir. This has greatly assisted them in their fact finding tour and in gaining the support of the American people at home.
