Hardships Benefit the True Believer
O ye who believe! Seek help with patient perseverance and prayer;
Indeed Allah is with those who patiently persevere.
[Suratul Baqarah ayah 153]
Allahu ta ‘ala has decreed that, in this life, hardships and disasters strike both believers and non-believers. For a non-believer, they are inconveniences that hinder him from proceeding with his normal involvement in the worldly life. For a believer, on the other hand, they are instances of rest and remembrance, tests that promise great rewards, and indications of atonement and expiation of sins.
13BRegardless of how little the harm is that strikes a believer, it carries with it glad tidings of forgiveness and elevated rank (in Jannah). Our Pious Predecessors from amongst the Ashabul Kiram and Taabi’en and those who followed them, used to be pleased when hardships afflicted them, seeing it as a token of Allah's forgiveness and benevolence.
Hardships as Expiation of Sins
Sayyidinaa Abu Hurayrah (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu) reported that the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) said:" Hardships continue to befall a believing man and woman in their body, family, and property, until they meet Allah burdened with no sins. "[ Tirmithee]
Hardships as a Sign of Allah’s Love
Sayyidinaa Abu Hurayrah (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu) reported that the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) said: "Whenever Allah wills good for a person, He subjects him to adversity" [Bukhari and others]
Hardships as a Sign of Imaan
Sayyidinaa Abu Hurayrah (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu) and Kab Bin Maalik (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu) reported that the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) said: "The parable of a believer is that of a fresh and moist plant; the wind tilts it this way and that way; and so is the believer; he continues to be subject to affliction. And the parable of a hypocrite is that of a firm cedar tree; it does not shake - until it is uprooted all at once." [Bukhari and Muslim]
IMAM ABU HANIFAH AND HADITH
Translated by Ismaeel Nakhuda
The following is a translation of the introduction (by Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafiz al-Makki) to Shaykh Latif al-Rahman al-Bahraichi al-Qasmi’s Al-Rasa’il al-Thalathah al-Hadithiyyah, a collection of three hadith compilations containing narrations transmitted by Imam Abu Hanifah Nu‘man ibn Thabit. It was during the Hajj of 2009 that I was sat in a tent in Mina, a stone throw away from the Jamarat, when I was forced to listen to a young man’s rant on how weak Imam A‘zam Abu Hanifah apparently was in hadith.
Ignoring the sanctity of the venue and time, this young man — who it later transpired was an instructor at Al Kauthar Institute — gave a very colourful and misleading description of the respected imam’s supposed lack of knowledge and prowess in hadith. He also gave very little opportunity to others to rectify his wrong impressions. During this lengthy and greatly troubling speech, this young man — who, to add legitimacy to his views, claimed to be Hanafi and cited several contemporary Hanafi ‘ulama to support his claim to this effect — made many frivolous comments regarding the great imam that left me greatly pained and astonished. I also wondered how one could indulge in such slander of an individual who met and narrated from several Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them), and that also at such a sacred time and place.
I pray and hope that by translating writings on this subject, misconceptions about this great tabi‘i, hadith scholar and faqih will be removed, insha-Allah. To add salt to my wounds, the Al Kauthar instructor also insisted that Imam Abu Hanifah apparently only knew seventeen hadiths! La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. I will, insha-Allah, deal with this issue in a subsequent translation.
Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafiz writes:
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and salat wa salam on the noblest of messengers and the seal of the prophets Sayyiduna and Mawlana Muhammad, the unlettered and noble prophet, and upon his family and companions, all of them.
After praising Allah and sending salutations upon the prophet:
The Islamic Ummah is united that Imam A‘zam Abu Hanifah Nu‘man ibn Thabit (may Allah mercy him) is one of the four followed imams — Malik, al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad and Abu Hanifah (may Allah mercy them all and be pleased with them).
Among those issues upon which all of the people of knowledge from both the early and latter times are agreed is that these four jurists, and their likes from among the mujtahid imams whose followers have gradually died out, only derived fiqh issues (masa’il) and Shari‘ah rulings from the book of Allah Most High and the Sunnah of His Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace), and that which these two sources indicate towards such as consensus (ijma‘) and legal analogy (al-qiyas al-shar‘i) etc.
On ways of attaining and maintaining it.
Alhamdulillah Rabbil ‘Alameen wa salaatu wa salaamu ‘alaa Sayyidil Mursaleen Habibunaa wa Shafeeuna wa Mawlaanaa Muhammadin ‘Abdika wa Rasulikan Nabiyyil Ummiyy, Khaatimul Ambiyaa'i wal Mursaleen, wa Imam ul Muttaqeen wa Qaaidil Ghurril Muhajjaleen, wa ‘alaa Aalihi wa Sahbihi wa Sallim.
Wa Qaal Allahu ta ‘ala fi Kalamihil Qadim ba’a Authu Billahi Min Ash Shaytanir Rajim Bismillahir Rahim,
Say: "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
Allahu ta ‘ala has directed His beloved and our Master, Sayyidinaa wa Mawlaana Muhammad Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim to show us the way of Mahabba [Divine Love]. He Azza wa Jalla was coupled loving Him with following the example of the Greatest Lover Habibunaa our Beloved Nabiyy Muhammad al Mustafa Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim.
Because of following our Master, Allahu ta ‘ala will shower us with His love and all that which is befitting of those who love Him. If we examine this closely, we come to realize that there is no forgiveness or mercy except through following the example of Nabiyyul Kareem Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim.
Is it possible to love someone without knowing him, without seeking, without intimate knowledge of their perfections seen and perceived? None of us can truly know Allahu ta ala except as He has himself described himself. About this Nabiyyul Kareem Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim said:
“Laa Uhswi thanaa an ‘alaih,
Anta kamaa athnayta ‘ala nafsik.”
Is Commemorating the Auspiciousness of Historical Events From the Sunnah or is it Bid’ah?
As salaamu ‘alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuhu. Allahu ta ‘ala has mentioned that certain days are auspicious and the Holy Last Messenger Prophet Muhammad Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim observed certain days with fasting etc. because of the auspiciousness of those days based on certain historical events happening on those days.
The basis of all our actions are The Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of Sayyidinaa Muhammad Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim. To understand clearly we need to understand the Sunnah. The Sunnah is divided into three categories;
1. Qawli [what was said or speech]
2. Fa’ali [what was done or actions]
3. Taqriri [what others did that was not objected to]
These three categories are also the three categories of hadith
We are reminded by Allahu ta ‘ala to remember the favors [ni’mah] bestowed us”
And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favor on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided. 3:103
Allahu ta ‘ala is us instructing to recount those favors. When the holy Prophet Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim made hijra to Madinah he observed the bani Israil [jews] fasting on the tenth of Muharram. He had the sahaaba enquire why they were fasting on that particular day. He was informed that they were fasting on that day because they had been led out of captivity by Sayyidina Musa ‘alaihi salaam on the tenth of Muharram and because if the auspicious nature of that day they were fasting. This was indeed a favor from Allahu ta ‘ala. Our beloved Prophet informed the companions to fast on the ninth and tenth of Muharram in observance of this auspicious day. He said that we are more worth of Sayyidina Musa that they the jews were. This fast became an established Sunnah of the Holy last Messenger Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim.
Concerning the Special Qualities of the Day of 'Ashura.
[Excerpt from Ghunya lit Taalibi Tariqal Haqq: Sufficient Provision for the Seeker of the Path of Truth]
By Sayyidina Sheikh 'Abdul Qadir al Jilani al Baghdadi Radhi Allahu 'anhu
Allah (Exalted is He) has told us:
إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ
The number of the months in the sight of Allah is twelve months. [They were already inscribed] in the Book of Allah on the day when He created the heavens and the earth; four of them are sacred. (9:36)
Inna 'iddatash shuhuri 'indallah ithna 'ashara, shahran fi kitabillahi yawma khalaqas samaawaati wal-arda min-ha arba'atun hurum
We have discussed this earlier in the present work, and we have also mentioned that [the month of] Muharram is one of the four. [As its name implies] this month is one of the months that have been declared sacred [al-ashhur al-muharrama] in the sight of Allah (Exalted is He). It includes the day of 'Ashura', and Allah (Exalted is He) enormously enhances the recompense of those who worshipfully obey Him on that day.
As we are reliably informed by Shaikh Abu Nasr [Muhammad ibn al-Banna'), Allah's Messenger (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) once said:
"If someone observes a day of fasting during Muharram, for every such day he will be credited with thirty days."
Amazing Events Associated with Yawmul ‘Ashura
According to another traditional report, transmitted by Maimun ibn Mihran on the authority of lbn 'Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with him and with his father), Allah's Messenger (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) also said:
"If someone fasts on the day of 'Ashura' in Muharram, he will be granted the spiritual reward of ten thousand angels [malaika]. If someone fasts on the day of 'Ashura' in Muharram, he will be granted the spiritual reward of ten thousand martyrs [shahid], as well as the spiritual reward of ten thousand pilgrims [hujajj] and visitants [mu'tamir].
If someone strokes the head of an orphan with his hand on the day of 'Ashura', for every hair on the orphan's head, Allah (Exalted is He) will promote him by one degree in the Garden of Paradise.
If someone provides a believer [mu' min] with a meal to break his fast on the night of 'Ashura', it will be just as if the entire Community [Ummah] of Muhammad (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) had broken fast as his guests, and had filled their stomachs to capacity.

Concerning the Permissibility of Cursing Yazid bin Muawiyya:
Opinions of Ahl as Sunni Scholars
A refutation of the Yazidi[i] [modern day supporters of Yazid] claim that it is not permissible to curse Yazid
and that he is Amir ul Mu’mineen
Al-Hakim has recorded a tradition of the Holy Prophet through Ibne Abbas. The Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) remarked: “The stars are security for the people of the earth against drowning (when at sea) and Ahle Bayt are a security to the people of the earth against discord. And if any tribe or group opposes my Ahlul Bayt it will itself become fraught with discord and become a party to Iblis.” [Ihya al Mayyit bi Fadhaail Ahlul Bayt Shaykh Jalaaluddin as Suyuti Rahmatullahi ‘alaihi]
This article was originally posted on the al-Adaab blog in December of 2009 in response to those who honor and show reverence to Yazid bin Muawiya. Two years later almost to the day we repost it. Those who claim that Yazid was the rightful Amirul Mu’mineen are by extension saying that Sayyidinaa Imam Hussain ibn ‘Ali ‘alaihi salaam the beloved grandson of the Holy Last Messenger Sall Allahu 'alaihi wa aalihi wa sallim was and is a murtadh [renegade] wa Iyyadhu Billah! They claim that since he opposed the oppressive rule of Yazid that he rebelled against the lawful authority. Their premise is that under no circumstance can a Muslim stand up against the tyranny and oppression of a so-called Muslim ruler. Their claim is that it doesn’t matter what dhulm or oppression the ruler rains down upon the heads of the people.
Ironically, modern day Yazidi rulers who make this very claim and have paid Mufti’s on the payroll who support their claim, rush to sanction other despotic and oppressive regimes under the pretext that the people of those countries have the right to overthrow despotic regimes, just not their regimes. Subhan Allah!
Each year we come together and commemorate the Shahadat of al Imam Hussain ‘alaihi salaam. We remember the stand he took against oppressive and un-Islamic rule. Yet many of us fear taking a strong stand on true Islamic principles for fear of being labeled Shia. True love of Imam Hussain and Ahl ul Bayt Ridhwan Allahu 'alaihim aj ma'een is manifest in our unwavering support for Imam Hussain and Ahl ul Bayt Muhammadi Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa ‘Aalihi wa sallim.
Our Muslim youth are being misguided on this issue by some of the elder Ahl As Sunnah Shuyukh who on the one hand teach that love of Imam Hussain ‘alaihi salaam and Ahlul Bayt is a requirement of Imam. On the other hand some of our Ahl As Sunnah Shuyukh are teaching that it is jaiz [permissible] to honor tyrants and evil doers such as Yazid bin Muawiyya by praying that Allahu ta ‘ala be pleased with him [saying radhi Allahu ‘anhu for him] and by calling him “Amir ul Mu’mineen”. This much we expect from the Yazidi’s from among the Pseudo-Salafiyya and the like. We never expected this from Ahl As Sunnah Shuyukh. Ahl as Sunnah ‘Ulama who dare to mention the atrocities of Yazid, or recount the words of Imam Hussain on the battle field of Kerbala or Sayyida Zaynab's ‘alaihi salaam courageous rebuke of Yazid in the court of Yazid, are censured not only by Yazidi’s but also by Ahl as Sunnah ‘Ulama. We too except to be censured, but we must stand up for the truth.
We pray that we are raised in the company of those we love honor and respect. Our love, honor and respect lies with Sayyidinaa Rasuli Akram, Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim, Imam Hussain and Ahlul Bayt ‘alaihimus salaam and the Khulafa who took the right way Ridhwan Allahu ta’ala ‘alaihi aj’maeen. We pray that Allahu ta ‘ala show those who love, honor and respect Yazid the error of their ways, as on Yawmul Qiyaamah we will be raised in the company of those whom we love.
Al-Hakim in his history and Daylami has also related from Abu Sa’eed that the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim.) said: “Allah will protect the life and the faith of those who regard three things and Allah will not help those who disregard three things (that is he will be in loss in this life as well as the hereafter):
(1) Respect for Islam.
(2) Respect for Prophet of Islam (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim).
(3) And respect for the household of Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) i.e. Ahlul Bayt (Ridhwaan Allahu ta ‘ala alaihim ajma’een) [Ihya al Mayyit bi Fadhaail Ahlul Bayt Shaykh Jalaaluddin as Suyuti Rahmatullahi ‘alaihi]

by Hadrat Allama Mufti Jalal al-Din Qadiri al-Amjadi
English Translation: Mawlana Kalim al-Qadiri [Bolton - U.K.]
Hadrat ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas Radhi Allahu Ta ‘ala Anhumma reported that the Messenger of Allah Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim has stated,
“‘O People! Allah has made Hajj incumbent upon you.’ Hadrat Aqra’ ibn Habis stood up and inquired, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Is it incumbent each year?’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘If I say ‘yes’ then it would be made obligatory and incumbent upon you each year, and if it was to be made incumbent each year you would not be able to fulfill this religious duty. Thus, Hajj is only once in the lifetime and those who exceed this (do more than once) then the (extra) is nafl (optional).’” [Mishkat, Kitab al-Manasik, Page 221]
From this we understand that the Holy Prophet has full power, control and authority on Shari’ah and Sacred Islamic Laws. If the Messenger of Allah desired, he could have made Hajj obligatory and incumbent each year. For a detailed treatise on this topic please read: Muniyyat al-Labib Anna al-Tashri’a biyad al-Habib (1311AH) by Imam Ahmed Rida Khan.
Hadrat ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas Radhi Allahu Ta ‘ala Anhumma reported that the Messenger of Allah Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim said,
“He who intends to perform hajj should hasten to do so.” [Sunan Darimi, Vol. 2, Page 27]
Hadrat ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim said,
“Make the Hajj and the Umrah follow each other closely, (wear the Ihram for Qiran, in which the intention of Hajj and ‘Umrah is done or perform both the Hajj and ‘Umrah consecutively) for they remove poverty and sins as a furnace removes impurities from iron, gold and silver; and Hajj which is accepted, its reward is Paradise.” [Sunan Tirmidhi, Abwab al-Hajj, Vol. 1, Page 167]
Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim said,
“Anyone who went out (of his house) with the intention of performing Hajj, ‘Umrah or fighting in the Path of Allah, and then passed away as he was on his way, then Allah the Most Exalted shall forever write for him the reward of a Haji, one who performs ‘Umrah and a mujahid.” [Mishkaat, Kitab al-Manasik, Page 223]
The Purity of Sayyida Ayesha and Prophets Knowledge of Unseen
by Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Na'eemi Alaihir raHmah
ANSWER TO THE OBJECTION:
“I know my wife to be only chaste.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazi, Baab Hadith al-Ifk, Hadith 4141]
Now remains Rasoolullah Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim being distressed and why he remained silent. Not knowing was not the cause of this. Consider an innocent person who is wrongfully accused of something. He knows that it’s a lie, but will still be distressed due to the fear of defamation. People spreading these rumours, was also the reason for this dilemma. If the Holy Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) did not wait for the revelation of the ayahs but immediately informed people of Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha’s innocence, the hypocrites would have said, “See how he protects his family members.” And Muslims would not have come to know of the rules of wrongful accusation. Also, the method of researching cases would not have been known and Sayyidah Ayesha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha would not have received the reward of patience that she demonstrated during this time. In short, there were many wisdoms behind this delay in revealing her innocence.
